Sony Xperia Go review

Sony Xperia Go

Light and compact, the Sony Xperia Go comes with a casing made entirely from plastic material. The case is rugged and has an excellent hand grip. Under the 3.5 inches display with touch sensitive controls without illumination are placed all the components encapsulated in a hermetically case made from blue plastic material. Also the microUSB slot, 3.5mm jack, SIM slot and SD slot are covered by plastic. The camera and LED flash are sealed with a rubber sealing ring and the speaker is covered with a transparent membrane. This design makes the Xperia Go dust and water proof.

The LCD display has LED-backlit technology and has a low resolution for a mid-range smartphone: 320×480 pixels and 165 ppi pixel density. Multitouch supports up to 4 fingers and the screen is scratch resistant with Sony Mobile BRAVIA Engine.

Like the Xperia P, the new Sony model. the Xperia Go, has NovaThor U8500 chipset and dual core processor at 1GHz Cortex-A9 and a Mali-400 GPU. Internal memory has 8GB (4GB are for storage and 2GB are for apps) and can be expanded with a 32GB microSD. RAM memory has 512Mb.

In a normal use mode checking Gmail, Facebook and Twitter, occasionally browsing over the internet, using the camera, using 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity and listening to music, Xperia Go stops working after about 30 hours of use. The phone has some power management bugs, because it consumes much battery in standby even in airplane mode.

IP67 certification offers full warranty against dust particles and waterproof immersion up to 1 meter. Shock resistance is standard; it isn’t certified for such accidents.

The Xperia Go runs Android OS 2.3.7 Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich is expected in November this year. Sony has changed the lockscreen, icons, widgets and settings menu.

The phone has a 5MP sensor with LED flash. The camera is not as good as other 5MP cameras but it takes colorful pictures with good contrast and nice details. Camera application has multiple features like autofocus, touch focus, 3D sweep panorama, geo-tagging, face and smile detection. Video recording is made at 720p resolution and you can use the LED while recording; it has continuous autofocus and video stabilizer.

The integrated music application offers a good song sorting, 5 band equalizer, stereo sound, bass amplification and xLoud amplification for the speaker which is strong anyway. In addition, Sony also offers a clever way of creating automated playlists which allows selecting a SenseMe channel depending on your mood, and his famous TrackID for music recognition. You can watch movies at 720p resolution and in AVI format. Sony implemented DivX/XviD support for the Xperia Go.

In many ways, the Sony Xperia Go is a smartphone which impresses the users who want a small, compact and rugged smartphone. This phone offers good performance for the class to which it belongs, a dust and waterproof casing, good sound quality and a well balanced camera. If you want a better Motorola Defy/Defy+ go for the Sony Xperia Go.
