The Motorola Milestone xt720 was launched in July 2010 and it was the first smartphone with xenon flash camera. Its launch boosted Motorola up between the smartphones.
At the first look it’s a bit bizarre with that asymmetric shape but once you take it in your hands you’ll like the feel. On the prominent side are two buttons: one which activates the camera and one which switches between camera mode and video mode. When you look at the back of the phone you see that it actually resembles a compact camera.
Ok, let me tell you about its key feature, the camera. It has an 8mp camera with xenon flash; actually it was the slimmest smartphone with an 8mp camera and the first with xenon flash. Motorola has done a good thing by making this phone with a dedicated camera button, because few smartphone have it and is a thing that we miss. Camera has with autofocus, geo-tagging, face detection and the most important, image stabilization. It can record HD video at 720p. The camera UI is simple and user-friendly, it has four icons from which you can select scene modes, flash settings, exposure mode and shooting mode and you can find the other features in the camera settings. The xenon flash helps you a lot in low light conditions and it can make good pictures in complete dark at a distance of approximately 2 meters.
From camera we jump straight to connectivity which is very good. The Milestone xt720 has dual band 3G connectivity with HSDPA speed of max 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA with an upload speed of 5.76 Mbps. It also has Wi-Fi b/g, DLNA, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and a microUSB connector v2.0. it doesn’t have Wi-Fi hotspot because it should receive hotspot capability when the Android Froyo update was coming but Motorola changed their mind and they didn’t made the update so the Milestone xt720 is stuck at Éclair. But we can find many custom ROMs on the internet. The phone doesn’t support Adobe Flash but the web browser is working great. You can zoom web pages in two ways: double tap or pinch.
The Milestone xt720 has 3.7 inch display which supports a resolution of 480×854 pixels and has pixel density of 265ppi. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass screen. The display is TFT capacitive with 16 million colors. It also supports multitouch and has touch sensitive controls.
On the hardware side we have a powerful 600 MHz Cortex-A8 processor and a good GPU PowerVR SGX530. The phone has an accelerometer for auto rotate, proximity and light sensor and a compass which helps the integrated GPS receiver. It comes with Google Maps preinstalled and the GPS signal is good. The phone comes with a stereo FM radio with RDS and like the GPS this one also has a very good signal. You will find that this phone has TV-out via HDMI and it can play at 720p. Its dedicated microphone helps at active noise cancellation. The internal memory of the phone is 150Mb; it has 256Mb RAM and 512Mb ROM. It has microSD card support up to 32 GB so you can free up the internal memory by moving the apps to SD.
The battery is not too powerful, it has only 1400 mAh and if you make abuse of the camera you’ll see how it drains. But in normal everyday use you can reach up to one and a half day. Normal use means you will listen to music, watch some videos, check your email and make some calls.
I didn’t said anything about its dimensions, but I mentioned that it is the slimmest smartphone with xenon flash camera. It has 116×60.9×10.9mm and 140g.
If you like to make good photos and having a smarphone at the same time the Motorola Milestone xt720 is the perfect choice.
